It's how one's users' are used to see a website. Also changing the themes should be done only when there is a dire need. Otherwise, always try and improve upon the original design. That's what Amazon has always done and they are successful. It's all about Conversion Rate Optimization and I would recommend reading some online blogs on it if you are really interested. Please try and correlate if the drop came after the change in the design of your website and what got impacted first, pageviews or the traffic from the SERP. Hope that helps.
